Shilajit is a traditional tonic of India, employed as a panacea by Ayurvedic and Tibetan Medicine practitioners for over 2,600 years. Shilajit is known the world over by many names, including Mineral Resin, Rock Essence, Mumijo, Brakshun, Brag-zhun, and Asphaltum punjabianum (in Latin). It is a Mineral Pitch or Resin found oozing from rocks of high elevation mountain ranges, often vaulted out of ancient sea beds through compression and subduction. Shilajit has been found in many locations globally, including most recently, the Americas. The majority of Shilajit available on the global market is currently exported from the Himalayas.
Since Shilajit has been used for thousands of years in India, it's popularity throughout the Himalayas has unfortunately led to over-harvesting practices, lower quality products and potential contamination. For this reason, when we first began searching for Shilajit to share with our Cintamani Tonics clients in 2015, we had a hard time finding sources that met our strict quality standards.
As if by divine grace, in 2016 a close friend introduced us to our first taste of wild harvested and purified American Shilajit. We thought, "this must be one of the greatest discoveries in modern American herbalism!" We were blown away by the unique flavor and its adaptogenic benefits. We instantly loved it and knew we wanted to bring this special American Mineral Resin to market. So we embarked on a journey to build the right team and systems to produce the first (and purist) American harvested Shilajit product available online.
In 2017 we launched the first ever American harvested Shilajit product available online ~ expertly purified and in easy-to-use liquid drops. It was received with instant acclaim. However, we knew we could make it even better. During our research and development phase, we integrated ancient Alchemical principles and advanced laboratory equipment to design unique low-temperature refinement techniques inspired by geological processes. Shilajit in Ayurvedic Medicine
Shilajit is a rare phytocomplex mineral pitch that has been recognized as a powerful medicine for thousands of years, and in the Ayurvedic tradition it is believed to be a complete panacea (cure all). This black plant pitch is considered a supreme "Rasayana" in the Ayurvedic herbal tradition, meaning it's a rejuvenating tonic. Today it's recognized by herbalists and scientists as one of the 8 primary authentic adaptogens in existence. Revered for it's nootropic qualities, Shilajit is also known as an Ayurvedic "Medyha Rasayana," meaning "rejuvenator of intellect." Shilajit is about as rare as uranium, and is found at high elevations within very old mountain ranges. It is a black sap-like substance that exudes from steep rocks at certain times of the year, and must be expertly purified in order to access the profound medicinal constituents it offers. Because it offers such a broad range of trace minerals and bioactive compounds, we like to think of it as Mother Earth's own multivitamin.
What is this unique substance made of?
Though many theories have been postulated, most scientists agree that raw Shilajit mineral pitch/resin differs from mineral tar in that Shilajit evolved from the natural humification of phytonutrients and organic water-soluble compounds via biological processes in the soil; therefore, Shilajit formation is not related to the geological processes hydrocarbons undergo. The exact geological origins of Shilajit have not been widely researched. However, recent studies on Eurasian deposits revealed that this water soluble humic substance seeps from deposits of organic material deposited in the Triassic strata (rocks that are estimated to be 200 to 250 million years old). The organic matter in Shilajit is thought to naturally filter through permeable rocks until it reaches an impermeable layer, then seeps out pores and fissures, collecting only where tectonic movements have allowed for exposure and exudation.
These ancient deposits of organic matter have been fully broken down and humified within layers of rock to render a uniquely bioavailable ionic mineral and Fulvic/Humic acid combination. Fulvic and Humic acids are powerful antioxidants and a crucial part of soil health, acting as large-chain transporter molecules delivering micronutrients and trace minerals directly into the cells of plants. In the human body, Fulvic acid works in much the same way ~ it delivers ionic trace minerals directly to the cells. It also offers potent antioxidant actions, binding to free radicals and other cellular wastes, safely eliminating them from the body.
