Deep in the quiet recesses of high alpine mountains, an ancient treasure gathers . . . Shilajit - a veritable mountain multivitamin - forms over centuries as it slowly seeps through stone. Shilajit is known as "the mover of mountains, and destroyer of weakness," and was revered as one of the most important medicines of the ancient world. This mineral medicine was first documented in the Charaka Samhita, the oldest compendium of Ayurvedic Medicine and Folk Herbal Traditions of the Himalayas (400 BCE).
The Charaka Samhita referred to Shilajit as "a cure for all diseases," and described it as a Rasayana - a rejuvenating tonic that promotes overall vitality and longevity.

Modern science has verified Shilajit's broad-reaching benefits, and has just begun to explore its diverse composition of phytonutrients, ionic trace minerals, and Humic Acids. Shilajit is a truly precious gem of ancient herbal wisdom, if used properly. Yet the online Shilajit market is saturated with trendy hype, and even false claims. We hope this guide helps to demystify Shilajit, so you can discern fact from fiction, and buy the best Shilajit online for your health.
We are Herbalists and steadfast seekers of quality and purity, and we first began our Shilajit journey over a decade ago. After trying Shilajit from around the world, we began harvesting and purifying our own American Shilajit in 2017. We're uniquely equipped to guide you through the intricacies of this market, and we hope this guide lights your way.
Learn why Shilajit should not be mixed with tap water, how to evaluate online brands for authenticity, and how to get the most from your Shilajit journey . . .
Hi! We're Jen and Deej Ankenbrandt, Herbalists and Shilajit Hunters. Let us give you the beta.
How to Guide: Buy the Best Shilajit Online
Searching for quality Shilajit online can feel like navigating a labyrinth. These helpful guidelines can help you find authentic and verifiably clean Shilajit.
Authenticity: Seek Direct-Sourced Shilajit Straight from Producers
What mountain range is it from? Real Shilajit crafters happily brag about the high elevations where they harvest. Is this a Reseller or a Direct-Source? Resellers are often vague about sourcing, making grand claims about Shilajit quality, without citing specific details about where it originated or how it was purified.
Purity: Look for Verified Independent Certificates of Analysis
Reliable brands provide third-party lab reports confirming purity and low heavy metals. When a company claims that their Shilajit is "free from all heavy metals" but does not disclose Certificates of Analysis, that's a red flag. Most Shilajit has a tiny amount of naturally occurring arsenic, so it would be false to claim "no heavy metals," unless the brand provides a COA showing all metals were "not detected." Now, if the COA simply meets Prop-65 standards, this merely means the product is verified safe. However, the Prop-65 limits are not a gold standard for optimal wellness, and more stringent limits have been set by consumer advocacy groups like LowHeavyMetalsVerified.org.
Forms of Shilajit: Resin, Powder, Liquid or Capsule
Shilajit naturally occurs as a resin, or it can be dried into a crystal, a powder, encapsulated, or used as a binder in precious pills or other herbal preparations. Fully dried lumps of Shilajit resin can be hard as a rock and messy to work with. We've found Shilajit is easier to use when it's a dry powder, a liquid, or a thick resinous viscosity. Our purified Wild American Shilajit Resin is thick like fresh honey, and easy to serve from the jar with any small utensil. Our best selling product is our liquid Wild American Shilajit Solution in spring water drops for easy and exact servings.
Potency: Rich in Fulvic Acid and Trace Minerals
Authentic Shilajit from around the world varies in naturally occurring constituents, but most Shilajit is about 20% Fulvic Acid, and 1% Humic Acid. Some varieties of Shilajit have higher natural concentrations; however, certain brands will extract and concentrate the Fulvic Acid, or add peat sources of Fulvic Acid to raise the natural levels. To get the most comprehensive benefits from Shilajit's naturally occurring full-spectrum of micronutrients, we prefer a full-spectrum purified Shilajit resin. However, if you're specifically targeting anti-viral actions, a stronger Fulvic Acid extract (40% - 80% Fulvic Acid) may be appropriate for specific, acute, and short duration uses.
Ethical Harvesting: Respect for Ecosystems and Fair Labor Practices
Seek out brands and sellers that employ ethical harvesting and respect fair labor practices. If a brand says nothing about who is doing the wildcrafting and processing, they probably don't know, or they may not be proud of it. And unfortunately, super cheap products could be made with child labor or could be destructive to ecosystems. How do we know unless the brand assures us otherwise?
Price and Quality:
Extremely low prices may indicate poor quality, adulteration with fillers, child labor or unfair trade practices. Yet price alone cannot determine quality. Authentic Shilajit brands worth supporting will share clean lab tests and ample details about sourcing and purification practices. Finely purified Shilajit is a rare and precious commodity - a premium product worth the investment.
We encourage you to explore our carefully curated collection of Wild American Shilajit products that we personally produce with the cleanest independent COA's we've seen anywhere on the market.

Why Shilajit Purity Matters
Authentic Shilajit is traditionally gathered by hand from high-elevation mountains, where it's an integral nutrient source for high alpine ecosystems. Animal tracks are commonly found around Shilajit deposits, indicating that many species (from small rodents to large herbivores) use it as a source of salt and nutrients. In its raw mineral pitch form, Shilajit is not safe for human consumption, and it must be carefully extracted to remove impurities and dangerous microbes.
Every Shilajit variety is a unique expression of the geological region where it formed. From the Himalayas to the Mongolian Altai to the American Rockies, all Shilajits offer a slightly different spectrum of minerals, Fulvic Acid, flavor, and terroir. Historical Shilajit purification methods are equally as diverse: some ancient methods include brewing the Shilajit pitch with Bhringaraj and Triphala, some filter and slow-cook the Shilajit, some dry it by sun-curing it, and many traditions have trade secrets. Whatever the purification method, the verified purity of the final product is what's most important.
The Health Risks of Heavy Metals
High heavy metals levels in the body have been linked to a wide variety of degenerative diseases and health conditions. Heavy metals can disrupt proper function of the neuro-endocrine system, the digestive system, bone density, and immunity. While acute heavy metal poisoning is rare, it's the slow accumulation of heavy metals in the body from many combined sources that contributes most to common health issues. So limiting exposure to heavy metals is always the best practice. For us, as Herbalists, when it comes to environmental toxins, we believe that less is more. We're here to help you cultivate the best possible health outcomes, and access the cleanest foods and supplements.
The "Free of Heavy Metals" Myth
In our modern era, we can prove the quality of purified Shilajit products by testing for microbes, heavy metals, and nutritional content. And the online marketplace is filled with Shilajit brands claiming their products are completely "free of heavy metals." However, upon deeper investigation, only a few of these brands share Heavy Metals Analyses, and even fewer meet or exceed Proposition-65 Standards.
Prop-65 is a California law that defines the maximum daily exposure limits to heavy metals that demonstrated "no significant risk" to health in limited clinical studies. Contrary to popular belief, Prop-65 is NOT a standard for optimal health.
Myth:
Many Shilajit brands claim their products are totally "free of heavy metals" because they meet Prop-65 Standards.
Truth:
The Prop-65 standards for heavy metals range between 1.2 parts per million for mercury, up to 40 ppm for arsenic. Most Shilajit brands barely meet the Prop-65 standard, meaning they do contain detectable levels of heavy metals. If a product were truly free from heavy metals then the Certificate of Analysis would show all metals levels as "not detected," meaning less than one part per billion (ppb). So if a product meets Prop-65 standards, that merely means it was proven to contain fewer heavy metals than the Prop-65 limit demonstrated to produce "significant risk" in clinical studies.
Significant risk is obviously very different from optimal wellness. If you only use the Prop-65 guidelines, then your Shilajit is likely to not cause significant health risks, but is it doing any good? The whole point of buying Shilajit is to invest in future health with confidence. And since Prop-65 standards only define "no significant risk" levels, they should NOT be considered the gold standard for safeguarding optimal wellness. Much finer grading systems have been developed in recent decades . . .
Here at Cintamani Tonics, we proudly use the letter-grading system developed by LowHeavyMetalsVerified.org, and every batch of our Wild American Shilajit scores A+ grades or cleaner. This means our Shilajit contains 600x less mercury than the Prop-65 standards. It's truly ... so fresh and so clean, clean!

How To Get the Most Out of Your Shilajit
When you find an authentic Shilajit worth investing in, it's important to know how to use it to get the most out of it.
Do Not Take Shilajit with Chlorinated Tap Water
Chlorine negatively reacts with the Fulvic Acid, reducing its effectiveness and diminishing its benefits for the body. Instead, only dilute Shilajit in pure spring water, purified drinking water, or other chlorine-free foods and juices.
Know the Daily Serving ~ A Little Dab Will Do
Studies have found the optimal daily serving of Shilajit minerals for the average adult is about 200 to 250 mg. Smaller or larger daily servings offered diminishing returns in several clinical studies. 200 mg is about a rice-grain-sized dab of Shilajit resin. Investing this tiny daily dose in your morning coffee everyday can help initiate benevolent cycles of health that continue to compound over time.
How to Work with the Strongly Bitter Flavor
If you find Shilajit unpalatable ~ you're not the only one! We spent years giving out samples at Farmers Markets, amused by the "first Shilajit face" that so many people make with their first taste of this powerful earthen essence. We've found Shilajit mixes well with other bitter flavors like coffee, chocolate, chicory, and Reishi. Citrus fruits like lemon, lime, and orange and tangy berries like amla, goji, schisandra and raspberry can also help mellow the favor. Traditional Ayurvedic Shilajit is often purified with Triphala, a blend of three vitamin C-rich super fruits. You can also mix Shilajit into honey, or simply encapsulate it in digestible cellulose capsules.
Support Daily Detoxification
Shilajit's Fulvic Acid functions like a mineral magnet, collecting trace minerals, and depositing them directly into cell membranes. It also has the ability to bind up environmental toxins and cellular wastes, gently escorting them from the body. Since Shilajit can mobilize toxins, some people may experience common detox symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, head and neck aches, dehydration, or digestive issues. It's important to support the body's elimination systems with extra hydration, herbs and binders that enhance natural detoxification processes. In Ayurveda, Shilajit is often taken in conjunction with colon-cleansing herbs like Psyllium Husk, Triphala, or mineral binders like Activated Charcoal or Bentonite Clay. We also suggest clinically-proven binders like Pectasol, an extract of citrus peels. If skin issues flare up, dry brushing or using herbal skin oils may also support natural elimination.

Start Small: Begin with a rice-grain-size dab (200 - 250 mg) daily.
Dissolve Properly: Only mix with Non-Chlorinated water and foods for best results.
Stay Well Hydrated: 1 gallon daily water in-take supports natural detoxification.
Take Between Meals: For best absorption, take Shilajit between or before meals.
Potentiate Herbs: Add to herbal tea blends to improve absorption of the herbs.
Activity & Rest: If Shilajit stimulates energy, take it early in the day, not before bed.

Shelf Life: Shilajit resin has an indefinite shelf life, and remains water-soluble, even if it dries out completely. Liquid Shilajit drops should be used within 1 year of purchase.
Remember, Shilajit is a tonic, not a quick fix. Steady use brings cumulative benefits.
The Science Behind Shilajit’s Magic
Shilajit is more than folklore; it is a scientifically fascinating substance. Composed mainly of trace minerals, Humic substances, and Fulvic Acid, it acts as a natural transporter of nutrients at the cellular level.
Key benefits include:
Enhanced Energy Production: Shilajit supports mitochondrial function, the powerhouse of cells.
Cognitive Support: Studies suggest it may improve memory and focus.
Anti-Aging Properties: High antioxidant content slows oxidative stress.
Immune Modulation: It supports and modulates the natural immune response.
Mineral Supplementation: Provides essential trace minerals like iron, zinc, calcium and magnesium in a highly bioavailable ionic form for strong bones and muscles.
Gentle Detoxification: Fulvic and Humic Acids support natural detoxification pathways, eliminating toxins and cellular wastes from the body.
We've found that integrating Shilajit into daily wellness routines is a simple yet powerful step toward longevity. Its effects unfold like the daily sunrise - steady, energizing, and illuminating.
